Title: Reinforcement Learning: State of the Art & Challenges

Abstract: In recent years, we have seen exciting breakthroughs in the field of ‘reinforcement learning’. In this talk, I will give a very basic introduction to this general field, where I put a focus on clarifying some of the terminology. With this I will cover some of the foundations of RL, the intuition behind the state of the art, and an overview of some of the main challenges for the future.

Bio: Dr. Frans A. Oliehoek is Associate Professor at Delft University of Technology, where he leads a group on interactive learning and decision making, and is one of the scientific directors of the Mercury machine learning lab. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science (2010) from the University of Amsterdam (UvA), and held positions at various universities including MIT, Maastricht University and the University of Liverpool.  Frans’ research interests revolve around intelligent systems that learn about their environment via interaction, building on techniques from machine learning, AI and game theory. He has served as PC/SPC/AC at top-tier venues in AI and machine learning, and currently serves as associate editor for JAIR and AIJ. He was awarded a number of research grants, including a prestigious ERC Starting Grant.
